La vicenda di Hakim Sanai, un poeta di corte vissuto nel XII secolo inizia come un romanzo storico: Sanai, al seguito del sultano persiano e del suo esercito, è in viaggio alla conquista dell'India. A un certo punto, passando nei pressi di un giardino, una musica eterea e un canto sublime li obbligano a fermarsi. Incontrano così un mistico sufi, noto come un ubriacone: Lai-Kur, di fatto un illuminato.
